Eating out with friends? How do you pay the bill? Tell us to win $25!
on Sep 12, 2018

When you eat out with friends, do you split the bill evenly, contribute just what you ate, or take turns paying? Do you use Venmo, PayPal, credit cards, cash or something else? How has this changed since mobile payments became commonplace? Tell us your favorite bill-paying strategies and you'll be entered to win $25 toward your next meal (paid how you want to spend it: Venmo, PayPal, or Amazon gift card!) Enter through September 30, 2018. Winner will be randomly selected and must be a U.S. resident at least 18 years of age.

When I am out with friends, it is usually the case that we split the bill according to what each of us ordered. Then it is paid usually with check, credit card or debit card. The waiters hate it when there are multiple credit cards with one bill, so we ask for separate receipts. Once in a great while one of us uses one credit card and we all pay that person with whatever is useful. And yes, I am usually with people who do the math. We all tend to leave cash for the tip.

We don't eat out very often but we do host dinners at our home. We mainly foot the bill but sometimes people will bring a dish to share.

I still just split the check by asking the waiter to put a certain amount on a credit card.

Whoever invited is the one who usually pays the bill. So when we invite it is our treat and we pay and we usually pay with cash.

With close friends, we simply take turns, with one covering the bill and the other the tip. With a group, I usually get cash first for my portion or we ask for separate checks. I'm pretty sure I'll be signing up for Venmo soon, though, as it's how my daughters typically do it... and it's the app of choice, apparently, for our current "baby pool."

We just pay our own bills based on what we order to make things fair. Mobile paying has not affected anything so far.
