Halloween is more than just a day to wear a costume. It's a day we suspend reality and pretend. It's a chance for us to be kids again and let our imagination run wild. We can paint our faces, get dressed up, and gorge on our favorite candy. We can have super powers, be a blond for a day, or impersonate our favorite celebrity.
The Rituals
Halloween is more than just October 31st; it's an experience. We decorate our homes, de-tangle the spiderwebs, put up the gravestones and lay out the body parts. We visit haunted houses, bob for apples and, of course, Trick-or-Treat. We attend Halloween Parties to show off our costumes and check out the creativity of others.
The Costumes
As much fun as Halloween can be, sometimes the thought of actually coming up with our costume can be a bit challenging. This season we'd like to help you tap into the SheSpeaks collective wisdom to help conjure up great Halloween costume ideas for this year and next. Do you have a preference for gory, scary, or witty or are you into the more abstract objects, animals or expressions? Do you like to be something from the past or a trend that's popular today?

Good Luck and Happy Halloween!
I like a good old fashioned witch costume tall pointed hat and everything else.
My favorite costume would be one that me and my mom created together. She would take liquid eyeliner and cover half my face in a spider web. I would then have various shirts or pants that would go with it. I would attach spiders and webs on me. One year we even did a web in my hair with little fake plastic spiders. I have always hated buying a costume off the shelf!
Well, my favorite costume by far was when I was working as a camp counselor for the YMCA and we had a costume even. I dug out a cape that my mum made me when I was in 3rd grade, cut out a logo like the "S" in superman, but instead I cut out my first and last initial and put it on my camp shirt with a pair of tights and matching colored top...too bad it was mandatory to wear the STAFF shirt to identify yourself as a counselor because my costume was pretty much set. One of the kids came up to me and told me that I was her super hero every day because I made camp fun for her...that so made my day!
My favorite homemade costume was when we made my daughter into a box of popcorn. I painted a box with red and white stripes and 'labeled' it POPCORN. Then I balled up tissue paper and painted the centers with a little yellow-these were her popcorn kernels coming out of the top of her box. She wore a red baseball cap that we hot glued real popcorn onto. Our neighbors remembered that costume for several years. So fun! :)
my favorite custome was my daughters angel/devil costume because nothing describes her more perfectly
My favorite costume my kids have worn so far are last year's years costumes. My then 1 1/2 year old son was dressed up as a dalmation puppy complete with a spotted hat with ears and my 5 yr old daughter was dressed as a black cat. They were by far the cutest puppy and cat I've ever seen!
One of my favorite costumes was the year my daughter was dressed as Cinderella. She was a teenager and the kids on the street actually thought she was Cinderella!
I like to be a saloon girl.. its fun and cute and flirty.. my daughter likes to be a witch so we try to make that cute and different
My favorite costume was the pink Marilyn Monroe dress that my mom made for me from a pattern. I had asked my grandmother, who was awesome at sewing, to make it. The just before halloween, my mom gave me the dress to try on. She then told me that she sewed it for me. I was shocked, but totally impressed. I loved it even more knowing that she took the time to make it for me.
My favorite costume was my daughter dressed as a mummy(homemade costume)
A Big Piece of Candy Corn!
I love making homemade costumes for my son. So far I think I liked his rock-star costume the best!
Although it was a simple costume, I have fond memories of my daughter dressing as a lady bug one year. What made it special was that my husband painted her finger and toe nails as lady bugs as well - it was so cute to watch this big guy carefully painting the pattern on those little hands!
My favorite costume was one I made for my 35 year old daughter when she was 5 years old. I took her leopard 2 piece bathing suit and turned it into a belly dancing costume with the help of gold curtain rings, amber colored "hippy beads," jingle bells, sheer dime store scarves, a gold colored stretch headband and fan shaped earings. She won 1st place at her school's Halloween Costume Contest and the 5 years later (I had packed it up well) my other daughter wore it and also won 1st place.
My favorite costume was the one my mom made me, Raggedy Ann, she used a lot of red yard for hair and my green dress. And I remember my dad dressing up using burnt cork on his face for a beard and wearing an old Ditch Witch Trencher orange jacket, then took us trick or treating, the elderly ladies would yell to him to come up the steps so he could get candy too, he did it every year and 40 yrs later that same jacket is well worn but we can't part with it.
