Birth Of Octuplets Spurs Debate

One young mother and her eight new babies are causing quite a stir in the news recently.  Because of the details surrounding Nadya Suleman’s case, the ethics involved in the birth of her octuplets has become much debated over.  Suleman, who is a 33-year-old single mother of six children from previous in-vitro procedures, currently lives with her parents.

Nadya Suleman's mother, Angela Suleman, has expressed concern over her daughter’s actions and recently told the Associated Press that she was not supportive of her decision to have more children.  Angela Suleman has told the press that her daughter was obsessed with having children and has talked about it since she was a teenager.

The Associated Press reports that all of the 8 babies, 6 boys and 2 girls, were delivered by Cesarean section.  The babies weighed anywhere between 1 pound, 8 ounces and 3 pounds, 4 ounces.  Seven of the eight babies are breathing on their own while one remains on a respirator.  It took 46 doctors and staff to assist in the delivery of these octuplets.

Much of the recent debate has been about whether doctors should have offered the 33-year-old mother of six the option to undergo in-vitro fertilization treatment.  Ethicists also question why the doctors would have implanted so many embryos.  And still others worry about how the mother will raise 14 children, now ranging in age from newborn to 7 years old and whether she will end up relying on public assistance.

A former caregiver to Nadya Suleman’s autistic son, Yolanda Garcia, spoke with the Long Beach Press-Telegram about the mother’s recent delivery.  She said, “From what I could tell back then, she was pretty happy with herself, saying she liked having kids and she wanted 12 kids in all.”

What do you think of the news about the recent octuplet birth?

Do you think doctors are at fault for allowing this mother to receive fertility treatment?

If she is intentionally had IVF after already having 6 children and not being able to care for them on her own and ends up being on taxpayer supported programs, that DOES make it the taxpayers business. And to have children that you can't afford with plans of selling them pretty much (movie, book, magazine deals, etc)... that is sick. This woman clearly has mental issues.

Also if you do not know what you are talking about you should not open your mouth. There was only 4 and they multiplied. The Mother is OBVIOUSLY pro-life an did not choose to KILL her children. Had she done that then you would have labeled her a MURDERER. You can not have it both ways. MAKE UP YOUR MIND PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

First let's not judge or be judged. Everyone can speculate there opinions of another but unless you are living her life you really have nothing to say. Who are you to say whether she should have gotten pregant again. Soe one asked who was footing the bill for her procedures that again is none of your business. Her mother should have really respected her daughter's wishes and kept her identity withheld and kept her opinion to herself. If she no longer wanted to support her daughter she should have just walked away and not try to get into the limelight. As far as demanding or asking for help. The major companies who help other parents when they have multiple births should not snub her just because she has 14 children who happen to be concieved by IVF what difference does it make. Everyone needs to get a life and stop judging one for the decisions they make.

The only person to be held accountable for the 8 is God, you have a problem with that take it up with him not the dct. But I do believe she should be held accountable for having more children period when she cannot pay and take care of the 7 she already had. That to me is sick, it takes a lot more then Love to raise childre the right way.

I read that she did not get implanted with 8, but only 4 and they multiplied. I think it's up to her to have as many kids as she wants as long as SHE can support them. By what I'm reading she is not supporting them, making it what I believe to be very irresponsible on her part. I do not believe at all that the doctor should be held accountable...it was not his decision, it was solely hers. I would blame him if he implanted 8 which would jeopardize her health and the babies, but it sounds like he did the normal implantation hoping on a single pregnancy NOT 8. It is not his position to judge what she can and can't handle at home, he does not live with her!!!

I have a real issue with this situation. How irresponsible does a mother have to be to not only to have 6 children at home but then to want more and allow a doctor to implant 8 embryos? This would not be an issue if she could take care of herself and her children money wise but she is living in her parent's 3 bedroom home. Her parents just recently filed bankruptcy which shows no one has any money. Does that mean the the taxpayers of California wil end up paying for these children? Last time I heard the state of California is broke. The only way I can see her supporting herself is by selling her story which makes this situation even worse. Basically, she will use her children to make money.

Fourteen children under the age of seven. Why would any woman do this to her body? Why would a 30-something woman with six children, no obvious husband, and living with her parents even consider being implanted with 8 embryos. Why didn't the doctors remove some of the eggs after implanting to prevent 8 live births from occurring? There are just too many unanswered questions here. Doctors should never have started playing God with the IVF procedures. It has gotten out of hand and like everything else, the American tax-payers are going to have to foot the bill.

This should not have happened because the lady is single, doesn't believe in marriage, doesn't want a husband, does work and already had six chidlren at he MOTHER's house whom she lives with because she doesn't have aplace of her own!

I love my children and grandchildren, and before I had children was told I probably wouldn't have any, so I empathize with women who cannot get pregnant without in vitro fertilization. That being said, the physician who implanted this many babies into this woman, who needless to say already had six children was more than irresponsible, it was in my humble opinion bordering on being malpractice. The ability to carry that many babies to term without complications is nil, and the practicality of the situation is that the hospital care for those little ones is going to cost the taxpayers of the US a bundle of money. These eight children are going to need longterm health and educational support.

How will the 14 kids ever get enough attention to feel truly unique and loved?

I am beyond amazement! Isn't six enough? What is that woman thinking! She's gotta have a screw loose upstairs. Who is going to support 14 children? She certainly can't because if she were to get employed anywhere, her paycheck and then some will go for child care. And what were the doctors thinking? There's something wrong will that whole batch of people.

The children are the ones that will be punished. I do not endorse giving her money however ,she will need help from people you will do it for the sake of her children. The children are here now so I hope they will get help mentally and financially.

I had as many kids as I could affford. WOuld have had more if I could affford to take care of them, and resent the fact that I can't have my family but have to pay for HERS! I heard in the news she said she gets paid to have them Is that welfare or something? I know they base their payments on how many kids you have. WHo is getting up with 8 kids at night, and why should others be drawn into her web?

Some people think that it is a blessing from God that she had so many children, and in a way, yes it is. But, God gave us the gift to have children naturally, not through envitro! I think that maybe playing God to some extent could end up as a curse...it rings true in this case!

WOW, that's really a handful! She may have wanted to have a baby but, Not that many. She has no idea what she is in for...and with no partner to help her! Those poor children!
