How many times have you gone into a store and thought, "Why is it like this? It could be so much better!" From the long lines at the wholesale clubs (because only half of the lanes are open!) to rude and inattentive sales people to messy racks at some stores where you can't find your size in the place its meant to be! Some of our shopping experiences seem ripe for improvement!
If you were given the chance to make a shopping experience better, which type of store would it be and why?
Grocery Store (36.2%)
Department Store (7.6%)
Mass Merchandiser (Wal*Mart, Kmart, Target) (39.1%)
Club Store (Costco, Sam?s, etc.) (4.9%)
Discount Store (TJ Maxx, Filene?s, etc.) (6.5%)
Drug Store (1.6%)
Big Box Retailer (Home Depot, Staples, Toys R Us, etc.) (3.8%)
GROCERY STORES ARE WHAT I WOULD CHANGE. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I WALKED DOWN AN AISLE AND HAD TO STEP OVER A SPILLED PRODUCT NOT YET CLEANED UP. THE BELTS THAT PULL THE GROCERIES ALONG ARE DIRTY. SO MANY GERMS ON THE HANDLE OF THE CARTS AND THE BATHROOMS ARE ALWAYS DIRTY. THERE ARE MORE SHOPPING CARTS IN THE PARKING LOTS THAN IN THE STORE.
I picked department stores, but should have picked mass-merchandisers. I shop at dept stores now in order to avoid the mass-merchandisers. The Mass stores are badly organized, as someone pointed out, rarely clean, usually grossly understaffed, have DISGUSTING restrooms, and you can't get help when you need it. I'd rather pay a bit more to avoid all that.
That's my main issue with dept stores....bad staffing. I hate waiting 20 minutes to check out.
I agree about customer service, too. I've worked retail. I know it's a tiring job, so I do not expect to get my behind kissed...but a hello and thank-you are a must!
Customer service is seriously lacking where I live. Imagine how frustrating it is to ask a question and find that the EMPLOYEE does not speak English!! If by chance they do, the indifferent response and lack of interest is certainly enough to make you bring your business elsewhere. Excuse me, Can I help you or any form of acknowledgment is a rare find these days.
I'm disabled and have a lot of trouble walking. I would like it if Corporate for all stores would have the little electric carts available and CHARGED. Target is horrible about having carts, but them not being charged. Staples doesn't have any carts at all.
I have had such a hard time finding assistance at WalMart lately and the people available have been from other departments or clueless. If I factor in my waiting time, it's not such a great deal shopping there. I love Target and will not shop WalMart anymore.
I think all stores would benefit from putting their prices in bigger print or at least have prices on product or displayed. I know that a lot of times , I have decided against purchasing a product because I was not sure of the price and did not have time to locate a kiosk that worked for scanning product to get the price.
The grocery store is where I spend the most money on a weekly basis, but I love to shop in discount stores looking for bargains. In both places, I'd appreciate it if the store would make the best deals more easy for me to pick out (sections marked clearance are helpful, but they are normally so small). I think the grocery store should be more obvious with signs for the discounted or the generic brands.
I think Costco type stores are so cold feeling. I feel like cattle being hustled from start to finish. I love the products offered, but I hate the feeling of the wharehouse.
I hate going to a grocery store and seeing the big displays of beer which always surround a sports item....like Publix has a sailboat surrounded by beer and SweetBay has a skidoo surrounded by beer. Who in their right minds think any sport on the water should be mixed with BEER??? The marketing companies of these products need to think about the message they are sending.
