Considering the downturn in the economy, are you more likely to buy store brands (such as generic or private label brands)?

We all have our favorite brands.  The ones that no matter what the coupon discount is off that comparable "other" brand, we will still by our favorite.  With the current economic environment, are you more likely to switch from national brands to purchase less expensive store or private label brands?

Do you think the quality is comparable?

No, I will stick with the name brands that I know and trust (0.0%)

Yes, I will purchase more store brands to save money (0.0%)

The same - I won't change my brand preferences because of the economy (0.0%)

Considering the downturn in the economy, are you more likely to buy store brands (such as generic or private label brands)?

A friend of mine who does marketing for a large chain of grocery stores in the north atlantic region of the US says most of their store brands are bought directly from the brand name manufacturer and packaged in the store brand box/wrapper.

I've always searched for the cheapest prices- whether that means store brand or name brand on sale. I'm still not too far out of college so I am still paying for the loans and in the same spending mindset.

I'm generating a price book for the items I purchase regularly. It helps me to know when something is truly a deal. It seems that I go to the trouble of clipping coupons for national brands, then get to the store to find that their brand is still cheaper. So the coupon goes in the trash - wasn't even worth my time and effort. The store's sales are usually better than the coupons - except the times they can be combined.

I usually buy the store brand for the savings! There are still some name brand things that I like a lot better then the store brand! The sad part, anymore, is I'm finding myself spending the extra money on any other store then fighting to Walmart! I love Walmart, but HATE having to deal with the traffic and such in there! My hubby works for CVS, too, so if we can get something there with his discount, it's usually cheaper!!!

For those in Maine and Florida, I highly recommend buying Hannaford store brand products. They really are top quality. We love the "Inspirations" line - gourmet for less!

Although on this survey I did select that I will be purchasing more store brands. This is true, but I do agree with everyone else who has posted that store brands are not always cheaper. I too have noticed this trend and will alway buy whichever brand is cheaper with our without coupons.

This survey left an option out--I ALWAYS bought generic products for some items, so that just isn't going to change. The products that I purchase brand-name were already the ones that, for some reason or another, I particularly buy that brand. Obviously that isn't going to change, and that's how I voted. Like others have noted, often name brands go on sale or with a coupon are cheaper than the generic equivalent. I also shop at ethnic markets when possible (I live in an insulated community in Central NY away from large cities) for better deals.

I have to agree with the following post... ***jvbs says: January 16, 2009 09:09 AM I live in central NY. One thing that I have noticed is that, while many brands are shrinking package weights, the store brands seem to be shrinking more than national brands. I shop by unit pricing and with coupons. Many national brands are actually becoming less expensive than store brands when the coupons and unit price are taken into consideration.*** I have taken purchasing store brands into consideration but research led me to the same realization. I also use sales/coupons, do rebates, etc..., and have found that I can continue to use my preferred brands most times cheaper or at a comparable price over store/generic brands.

I shop based on unit weight. Generally, the store brands wind up being less expensive. 9 times out of 10, the store brands taste just as good as (in some cases, BETTER than) name brands. Unfortunately, for many of the items we regularly purchase, there are no coupons, and I don't like buying extra things just because I get a discount. I can buy over a week-and-half's worth of groceries for $70 for a family of 4.
