Recently, the economic news about stronger than expected retail sales, has given many a glimmer of hope!  As shoppers however, we seem to be constantly looking for smart ways to save money.

In light of the economic downturn, if you had to replace a favorite brand name product with a cheaper product, are you more likely to choose a cheaper name brand or a store brand?  Why?

We’d like to hear what you think!

I'm more likely to choose a cheaper brand name product (50.9%)

I'm more likely to choose a store brand (49.1%)

If you had to replace a favorite brand name product with a cheaper product, are you more likely to choose a cheaper name brand or a store brand?

I've found that some store brands are actually better than name brands.

Depending on which store brand, some store brands are actually better than the name brand items.

It depends which is cheaper. With bath/body products I usually only get name brand but it's because I'm getting them free (or getting paid to take them) by playing the drugstore game. With food, it's whatever comes out cheaper for most things. Certain things though have horrible store brands... like chocolate syrup I use name brand because I have never tried a store brand of that that I liked.

Depends on the products. I ussually read the active ingredients and if they match I'll give it a try. I am more particular about what I give my children than myself

Someone has to make the store brands, and I've heard many times they are manufactured by the brand name companies, just generically packaged. Most of the times the ingredients are the same. I buy what is cheaper at the time, store brand, or name brand on sale or with a coupon.

Some store brands are just as good as name brands but alot of the time I have found that they are of a lesser quality. i.e. dishwashing soap, maybe cheaper but you have to use twice as much, not much saving there.

It really depends on the product. For the most part, I will chose generic brands but there are some products that I will only purchase in name/store brands due to higher quality or taste.

In my experience, not all store brands are worth even the cheaper price. Even when the ingredients appear to be the same, some of the quality of the higher priced product is compromised. I bought the store brand equivalent to Gas-X extra strength the other day. I have always bought the name brand but decided to give the store brand a try. That will never happen again. It was NOTHING like the name brand, tasted horrible and even the texture was completely different. Sometimes the more expensive name brand is a better value. Why? Because if you buy a cheaper item and find it doesn't perform the way you expected from the name brand, you've just wasted the money for the cheaper brand, only to go buy another product with the performance you were looking for. Not a good value in my opinion.

The way things are now I buy whatever is the lowest price.

I usually don't have any issues with store brand products. The only store brand product I won't buy is diapers. I've had bad luck in the past and won't risk it again.
