Of the following compliments, which would you want to hear the most?

As women, different things motivate us. A group of friends recently got together and starting comparing notes on compliments. One had recently been told that she was beautiful. She said that it made her day. Another said that she would prefer to hear that she is special.

Perhaps, different comments are appropriate at different times but, it got us thinking about what we most liked to hear. There doesn't seem to be a one size fits all.

What do you like to hear and why?

I love you (40.4%)

You're beautiful (23.8%)

You're smart (16.5%)

You're special (12.7%)

You're funny (6.5%)

I struggle with obesity. So when my husband tells me I'm beautiful, it means more to me than anything else. I know he loves me, but when he tells me I'm beautiful it makes me feel extra special.

For past couple of years I had very low self esteem. Though I am a Computer Science Master student, I never believed in my capabilities. I am good looking , that I know. But, when some one calls me smart, it gives me a new confidence. It makes my beauty more meaningful. I like this compliment more than "you are beautiful".

This was a tough choice. But for me, being told "I Love You" sums up all of them. Everyone is smart, funny, beautiful, and special in their own way. Being told "I love you", to me, means all those things and more.

Having someone saying hello how are you before the conversation begins means alot to me, It shows me they are not focused on themselfs, they are concerned on others well being.

I would like to think that I am somewhat unique and somewhat special to someone whose not in my family.

I chose you're beautiful because my husband says i love you all the time. it sounds routine - like something he has to say. you're beautiful says so much more to me. after 8 years of marriage, you're beautiful means inside and out. after 2 babies, and 60 extra pounds, it means i still love you even though you're overweight, and tired and have wrinkles and dimples in the wrong places.

God loves me. My husband and children love me. But I have worked long and hard to educate myself to make the right choices, to live a good life, and to keep my mouth shut and my ears open at the appropriate times, so when people say, "You are smart!" or "That is such an interesting outlook!" it reinforces that I am making positive choices in my life.

I am one of the few that chose "you're funny". I choose that one because being funny allows you to leave a lasting impression on a person and one good laugh can improve anyone's day. Plus anyone can say it; a complete stranger, your boss and co-workers, even your loved ones.

I want to be told "you're funny" because everyone is loved by someone, special in some capacity and beautiful in someones eyes....being funny is something "extra" that not everyones got. I think being told you're funny also gives a lot of credit to your intelligence.
