I lost my job this week. I have a husband who is disabled. Basically I lost my job because after a year of being able to work for my company from home - I was unable to work 40 hours at the office location. So, finances are my main concern.

My husband installs carpet and flooring and is considered self employed. His job has always had it's slow times, but work is very slow right now. For years, I helped him, (the last paying job I had was for the census bureau in 1980, lol), so I really don't have any "work experience". I've tried to get hired, but at my age, it's not happening, so financial worries are always on my mind. Fortunately, God has been answering my prayers through help from friends and family that we haven't fallen behind on any bills. I have faith that that will continue, that's the only thing that keeps me going.

I am so sick... of hearing about the Swine Flu. Yes, it's very sad that there have been some fatal cases in children. But the regular flu kills roughly 36,000 people each YEAR in the United States ALONE, and I don't hear anyone freaking out about that... According to the CDC, "Most people who have become ill with this new [H1N1] virus have recovered without requiring medical treatment." Perspective, please, people!

A youngster in a family we know died of swine flu not too long ago in our small community, and the disease has been all around us in this area of Alabama, but my sister and brother-in-law are doctors and that is not what is most pressing on my mind. One of my sisters, and RN, was out of a job for over three months recently and I am currently looking for a new job (still holding my old one) and looking to move, while my SO will likely be changing jobs as well in the coming year. The terrible job market has really worried. I don't want my family to end up in the scary situation that my nurse sister was recently in because of lay offs and a job freeze that she could have foreseen. Sickness is something we can deal with, as H1N1 is something that, for the most part, is NOT as dangerous as it is played up to be, but lack of work or not having money is a dire situation we do not want to get into.

Having lost my job early in the summer, I'm constantly evaluating and adjusting the household budget to ensure that our basic needs are met. In an effort to meet additional financial demands, I spend time discovering ways to compensate an already stretched budget and looking to start up a business.

As a minister, I am concern with helping people discover the spiritual side of life and use the principles in dealing with the stresses of life--health, money, relationships. I, too, am confronted with life's issues but know there is always a way to overcome. This knowledge I share with others.

My family is my focus right now. Especially after this weekend. Both boys were sick. I got a flu shot but I worry about them. I don't currently work outside of the home, so if I am sick, I can stay in bed and get well. They have to go to school sick unless they have a fever or a bad cough. We do all we can to stay well, but this year, we are already sick, and it is only the first of October.
