Should Myspace Be Your Teen's Place?

You have probably heard of the popular social networking website Myspace. If you haven’t, it’s a sure bet that your children have. The word Myspace has easily found its way into most teen’s daily lives and vocabulary.

With the help from sites like Myspace, the internet has allowed so many people to connect who would have never had the chance before. Countless relationships, both good and bad, have begun over the internet. Advances in online social networking are changing and evolving so quickly that it can be difficult for a parent to keep up.

Myspace is one of the fastest growing websites in the country (more than 50 million members and counting). With a network this large it is no wonder many parents have fears about what their teens reveal to strangers, and anxiety about the possible sexual predators lurking on the other end.

These fears are only heightened after the all too common reports of sex crimes being linked to the site. The problem has gotten so bad that just recently law enforcement officials in eight states asked the website’s operators to hand over lists of convicted sex offenders who are currently members.

So how can you find out what your children are doing on the internet? The Polly Klaas Foundation (a child safety group) offers some of the following safety tips for parents of internet and Myspace users:

• Ask your child to show you what they do online
• Let them know from the beginning that you will be monitoring them on the internet
• Use blocking and monitoring software
• Let them know that they can come to you if they need help or are in trouble

What do you think of social networking sites like Myspace?

Do you think that with proper parent supervision a site like Myspace is safe enough for a teen to use?

I think it is a bad thing for kids b/c it takes their attention away from what they should really be focused in on ... like SCHOOL!!! Not only that, it also opens the door for sex offenders to get into contact with them. It's just bad all the way around in my eyes and so if your teen does have one, I hope that u are keeping a close eye on it!

I have a MYSPACE that I use to stay in touch with some close friends and more importantly my family, such as all my siblings because I have 6 and my parents to. We use this site for a meeting place and to simply keep in touch. I had at one point allowed my daughter who is 15 now to get a myspace and I had passworded it myself so she would have to ask to use it. But teens these days are growing up to fast and they thing they are beyond the world. It wasn't long before I deleted it becuase I couldn't believe the stuff I had seen come over her page and her inbox. But its not just MYSPACE that these kids are using. There is facebook and I recently found a website called MY YEARBOOK which is almost as bad as the rest. They also use sites like PHOTOBUCKET and YOUTUBE to keep in touch with friends and so called internet pals. I am just glad I am internet savy and seen the issues at hand before there was trouble..People need to be aware that its not just MYSPACE and if properly used, MYSPACE can be a safe place.

I THINK THEY SHOULD REALLY CHECK WHOS JOINING MYSPACE... THERE ARE A LOT OF PERVES ON THERE PRETENDING TO BE KIDS ... I AM 32 AND I HAD A STALKER ON THERE... SENDING ME CRAZY MESSAGES... I HAD MY PROFILE SET ON PRIVATE ...SO GO FIG... IF YOU LET YOUR CHILDREN HAVE A MYSPACE , MAKE SURE THEY DONT LIST WHERE THEIR FROM , ? CITY ? STATE ? AND CHECK THE PEOPLE ON THIER LIST EVERY SO OFTEN.. ACTULLY GO ON THE OTHER PERSONS PROFILE AND LOOK AT IT .... BECAUSE THERE ARE ALOT OF HACKERS... AND SOME IDIOT COULD HACK INTO YOUR CHILD's FRIEND PROFILE AND FIND OUT INFO ABOUT YOUR CHILD..... BE SMART AND SAFE... LETS PROTECT OUR CHILDREN .....

my 13 year old granddaughter has a my space page....the computer is at my house and is in the kitchen....her mother and i both know her password (or whatever it is called) and check her "space" randomly...we had to approve her profile and she is only allowed to have family, people we know and friends from school on her "friends" list

I allow my teenage daughter to have a myspace. I am her friend (on myspace)and now the friend of many of her friends. I always know what is going on, who is sneaking out, drinking behind their parents backs etc. The kids that made me their friends forget that I get all of the bulletins they send to their friends. So I am completely in the know. It has helped me make decisions about which girls/boys I want her socializing with. I have been careful not to mention to her how I know so much of what is going on. She thinks I have some special "power". She has even replied to requests to sneak out with "I can't, I will get caught, I dont know how but my mom always knows when I am thinking of doing something wrong"

I love myspace. I use it all the time to reconnect with people and stay in touch with others. My children are not old enough yet to have one, However I beleive like with all things you must monitor your child. Make sure you have access to their account and page and review to make sure they are not posting anythiing they should not. My account it set to private so only those I allow to be my friends can see my page and pictures and read what I have on my page. there are safety precautions that you an but in place.

I totally agree with the fact of making sure you know what your teens are doing by knowing passwords and monitoring often...I done a study in my Sunday School class and found out most parents aren't taking the time knowing what there teens are doing online...Parent control software is a must...We need to keep our kids safe....and teach them the dangers...because anyone of us can fall victim to a preditor...

I dont have kids, howeverI went to myspace.com once and will never return, its not my kind of place, is it safe for kids? Better have mom or dad hanging over your shoulder when you go to that site.

Well I allow my teenage daughter to have a myspace and she loves it. She is highly supervised and all her settings are private so only her friends can look at her page. Plus i know her password so i randomly check her page. I think that if your child is supervised while on my spcae then everything is ok.

Forget the teenage children- that I don't happen to have! Myspace is a scary place for adults! I admit to being a novice with those types of communities but, I signed up as a member a couple of months ago. Within a week I had received weird and troubling emails from dozens of men (I made the mistake of putting a picture of myself and my one year old on my page. It really freaked me out. I immediately took the pictures down and have since received far less nasty emails from pathetic (and probably dangerous) men. I think sites like Myspace are great for certain things but, it was clear to me that there are many lonely and probably dangerous people lurking on the site. The policing is difficult so my advice is "beware consumer"!
