Women's Voices in Politics and the Big Issue of Abortion Bans

We recently asked SheSpeaks members how they are feeling about the political climate, any changes in their voting patterns, and major debates on hot topics, like abortion.

Check out these take-aways from our recent surveys below -

Our Voices in Politics

  • 68% of women surveyed in March of 2023 reported that they felt their voices carry less weight than men when it comes to politics.

  • Lots of women (35%) also said that they would be more likely to vote for a female candidate today than they were 10 years ago.
Women’s Abortion Rights, the Big Issue
  • In an April, 2023 survey during the same week Biden announced plans for a second term, close to 50% of more than 1,000 women surveyed said that bans on abortion will affect the way they vote in future elections.

  • More than a quarter (27%) of women report being more Pro-Choice since the Roe V Wade case was overturned.

  • Women are also keeping track of laws and how they may affect us in the future. More than 80% of respondents were aware that US courts are considering a ban on the “abortion pill”, Mifepristone, and 57% said they would be concerned if this pill becomes banned. A little more than a quarter (26%) say this ban would not concern them and 17% have not decided on the issue.

  • Pro-Choice candidates are on women’s minds as well. As a result of the overturning of Roe V Wade, 60% of women say they plan to vote for Pro-Choice candidates. Only 18% of those surveyed said they would vote for Pro-Life candidates and 22% were undecided.
Our own women’s insights expert and CEO, Aliza Freud, weighed in on the survey results and considers how women’s changing views in politics may affect future campaigns including the upcoming presidential race.

“The implications of the overturn of Roe v. Wade are now hitting home for women. Not only are they shifting their views on abortion rights due to the overturn of Roe v. Wade, but they are telling us that they are more likely to vote for female candidates as a result of the recent changes to abortion rights. With 28% of women now more likely to vote for female candidates, this will have significant impact on upcoming elections--including the 2024 Presidential race.”

As far as Roe V Wade, it is imperative that all women & women of child bearing age have every single right when it comes to their own bodies. While it does not affect me physically, it affects me morally. I will not vote for anyone who is against Pro choice.

It's surprising that our female concerns are decided primarily by men and politics. Deciding on an abortion is a painful and difficult decision no one wants to have to make. But it should be between a woman and her physician. Not between women and a politician. Also, I'm not surprised that 68% of women surveyed in March of 2023 reported that they felt their voices carry less weight. It's been this way for far too long and the farther right the politicians go, the less we are heard. I've come to realize that in just the last few years how it's getting worse instead of better, and I plan to vote accordingly.

ProLife here! Free birth control (condoms) are available thru Health Departments, even pregnancy tests, With the number of couples who can't have children want them. God doesn't make mistakes!! I do believe that women who do not want kids ever - should be able to get their tubes tied. My oldest daughter who is thirty-five now has tried but the doctors wouldn't do it. When you are married then you also I think have to have your husband's permission! I had to give permission for my husband to have a vasectomy.

It is heartbreaking to me to see how many women do not care about unborn babies. God help us!

Science is prolife. You have sex, there's always a chance of getting pregnant. That's science! Nature wants to create life. So, don't tell me I'm unscientific for wanting a baby that's created from the Science of Sex, to have life. That baby that's made doesn't get a say in whether or not it's born. One can choose not to raise it, just as one had the right NOT to have sex to create it in the first place. Having a child teaches one to be unselfish and giving. Getting rid of life in this way is simply selfish. This separates humans from animals that one can control our primal urges and not create life when one can't or doesn't want to take care of life that's created.

I am pro life along with half the women in the country. Abortion is murder and many women have murdered their unborn children.

I'm also pro-life. A baby is not an organ, and abortions are not healthcare.

I do not and have never planned to have a child. With that being said, since Roe was overturned, it has heavily affected me and influenced life decisions. I was born and raised in Texas but moved for college to a state that protects abortion luckily but doesn't offer a plethora of careers. I've been offered multiple jobs in Texas and have declined every one because of how Texas attacks me and other possible child bearers (and all other marginalized communities). It's also frustrating to hear uneducated, usually religious-based arguments about abortion that steer its legality. I'm sure the majority of people banning abortion (signing or creating these bills) don't believe in science, have never done any meaningful research into reproductive healthcare, and don't actually know and understand how abortion bans negatively affect everyone.

Govts should not be making laws preventing medical care. Abortions are not just for unwanted pregnancies, they're also for saving the lives of women in the case of complications or death of fetus. These laws even put women who have miscarriages (aka spontaneous abortion) in legal danger. Take away viagra.

I am not pro-abortion. Women today have many alternatives to getting pregnant in the first place.
