When my grandfather was young, he used to carry a hot baked potato on his walk to school. Not because it was his lunch, but because it kept his hands warm. This winter, I might just be stocking up on potatoes - I'll try anything to be able to stay outside longer.

Just because the temperature is dropping, doesn't mean you have to hibernate! Check out these tips (that don't involve vegetables) on how to make the most of the cooler weather. Plus, enter to win a $75 Amazon gift card.*

Outdoor living

If you have the luxury of outdoor space, make it cozy. Outdoor heaters, fire pits and movie projectors are trending. String up lights or place lanterns on the table and you have a perfectly Instagrammable Hallmark movie set.

But if the heater you want is sold out, don't worry. Bring a thick blanket made of wool or polar/micro fleece to wrap around you. Even better, try a Snuggie (a wearable blanket) or a Comfy (a giant oversized sweatshirt)! They are both perfect ways to feel cozy no matter what you are doing.

Don't forget hot drinks to heat you from the inside out. Our members recommend using a good travel mug, like Bubba and Klean Kanteen to keep your drink steaming for hours.

Also, try thinking outside the box for timing. Rather than sitting outside in the evening after the sun has gone down, get your fresh air in the afternoons when the day is warmest.

Keep moving

Sitting around with friends is nice, but being still can make the cold worse. Try meeting your friends for outdoor exercise, a walk around a park or a photo shoot in front of your favorite neighborhood sites.

Another option is to bring out the tailgating games. Corn hole is a fan favorite, and lately, we've also been loving Kan Jam. It's a simple frisbee game where someone throws the frisbee and their partner helps them get it into a bucket/goal. According to SheSpeaks member mgs1997, "I don't have an athletic bone in my body, but this game is so much fun."

Or put on your favorite music and have a dance party. That will definitely keep you warm.

Time to shop

Swedish parents have a saying they often repeat to their children: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.” If you're going to be outside, it's important to dress the part.

Make sure to have a warm coat (we love the Orolay jacket from Amazon that everyone's talking about) and warm socks (you can't go wrong with Bombas Merino Wool Socks).

For your hands and feet, gloves and mittens are key, especially for kids. SheSpeaks member Emimorgan is a big fan of Primary Cozy Mittens. For extra warmth, try hand warmers. ICandyGirl recommends the rechargable warmers by OCOOPA, which has three choices of temperature. They make great holiday or "house-warming" gifts!

We're also realizing that wearing a face mask is not only an extra line of protection against COVID-19. It will also keep your nose and face warmer too!

*Note: CDC guidelines recommend wearing a face covering and keeping socially distant (at least six-feet apart) from anyone who does not live in your household while enjoying these activities. Of course, if you do not feel well, stay home and reschedule for another time.

What are you doing to stay warm as the weather gets colder? Tell us to win a $75 Amazon gift card!

Staying warm is not top of mind when you live somewhere where it is in the 70s though a lot of the winter months.  But for warmth or pleasure one can never go wrong with a good cup of hot Earl Grey tea.

As a child I was a competitive swimmer, all year round! I would go outside in snowy stormy weather with completely wet hair from swimming, and my long hair would freeze into "haircycles"! I remember it being so fun, and I NEVER caught a cold!
