According to The Hollywood Reporter, the summer box office is in a slump, down 15-20% compared to 2013! That's why we're here to the rescue with a preview of August's most anticipated release, and more importantly, we're giving away Movie Gift Cards you can win by commenting below!

Last summer saw the likes of Iron Man 3 and Despicable Me 2 leading a slew of films that toppled the box office over $100 million during opening weekends alone.

This summer there have been a few films to achieve good opening weekends, but none hit the magic $100 million mark (including The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and The Amazing Spiderman 2). The only exception was Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Studios are betting on Guardians of the Galaxy, the second Marvel film to grace theaters this year. It’s a film that offers American audiences everything from a piece of nostalgia to intergalactic annihilation, and it's set to open this week.

But can one film alone save the box office? And what’s keeping audiences away from the cinema? Is it the cost of film tickets, which in some cities can top $15.00? Or is it the quality of films? Are the studios no longer choosing stories that appeal to mass audiences? Is there too much to watch on streaming television?

There have been a few films this summer that defied expectations (with huge appeal to women in particular) including The Fault in Our Stars, Maleficent, and Jon Favreau’s film, Chef, which was made on a shoe string budget using big name actors. Also, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and A Most Wanted Man starring the late Philip Seymour Hoffman are two art films that have seen strong openings. It will be interesting to see what kind of reception The 100 Foot Journey, a film that revolves around racial relations and food in France, has when it opens next week. Will backing by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey be enough to lift a film out of the summer box office dulldrums? Time will tell.

In the meantime, enter to win a Movie Gift Card in the August Movies Giveaway by commenting below and telling us about your all-time favorite summertime movie!

The only reason I haven't gone to see Guardians of the Galaxy yet is that the daughter I would go with was out of town last weekend (and her work schedule this week plus us both getting ready to leave for out of town on Thursday morning leaves us no time this week). We have a SECOND weekend giveaway the weekend after, so we might have to just wait until we're both back in town without any schedule conflicts, but we'll definitely be going to see it. I can't think of any summer release movie I was extremely excited about. It seems that most of the movies I really want to go to the theater to see tend to be fall and winter releases. I guess I'd have to save Iron Man 3 from last summer. And, in that case it was as much, if not more, just the overall experience with going to eat with my daughter and her friends and just the overall experience.

Transformers! I loved it! I didn't think I would like it as much as I would, but this Summer I would have to say it was the best Movie I saw.

my all time favorite Summertime movie would have to be Jaws.. I remember my daddy taking me to see it at the drive in movies in the early 70s on a daddy & me "date night" I was so little and my dad was only about 22 years old.. sitting in his VW bug and being so scared but so happy at the same time. My daddy is older now and of course so am I but every time I go to the beach I think of that movie, and my dad, and I have to smile..

Our favorite so far this summer is "Heaven is for Real" It is a nice feel good movie that gave us a break from all the action. Ready to jump back in with this epic movie.

I loved 50 First Dates. I'm not so sure I have one for this summer though. I agree with Kimcres when she said the cost of tickets (which is astronomical) violence (it's getting out of hand now and it seems like people are taking human life for granted), immature (I mean really, some of these movies shouldn't even be movies. and language (you can hardly take a child to see a movie with f-bombs being thrown all over).
