Halloween is more than just a day to wear a costume. It's a day we suspend reality and pretend. It's a chance for us to be kids again and let our imagination run wild. We can paint our faces, get dressed up, and gorge on our favorite candy. We can have super powers, be a blond for a day, or impersonate our favorite celebrity.

The Rituals

Halloween is more than just October 31st; it's an experience. We decorate our homes, de-tangle the spiderwebs, put up the gravestones and lay out the body parts. We visit haunted houses, bob for apples and, of course, Trick-or-Treat. We attend Halloween Parties to show off our costumes and check out the creativity of others.

The Costumes

As much fun as Halloween can be, sometimes the thought of actually coming up with our costume can be a bit challenging.  This season we'd like to help you tap into the SheSpeaks collective wisdom to help conjure up great Halloween costume ideas for this year and next. Do you have a preference for gory, scary, or witty or are you into the more abstract objects, animals or expressions?  Do you like to be something from the past or a trend that's popular today?

Tell us your favorite Halloween Costume in the comments below and you'll be entered to Win 1 of 4 Spooky Halloween Prizes! The prizes are a TWIX® Halloween Prize Pack, Halloween Chef, Halloween Decorations & Halloween Accessories packs . See below for more details. I think my favorite Halloween costume so far will be what my son dresses up as this year...a police man! The reason it is so special to me is because he chose it on his own, and in his tiny voice tells everyone he knows how excited he is to be a policeman. He just turned 3, so I think he is starting to understand what Halloween is all about, and that makes this year's costume even more special for me.

My favorite halloween costume was a gum ball machine. You tape balloons all over your chest, stomach and back and wear red pants and a red hat.

2 years ago, my daughter was a candy corn. It was the cutest costume- it looked kinda like a 60s gogo dancer but in candy corn colors :)

When I was a kid, my mom made paper mache heads for my brother, sister and I. We were the three little pigs. We wore jeans, large flannel shirts with a pillow in the belly. We had curly pink pipe cleaner tails. To make it even better, she made a red vest that said "Big Bad Wolf" for our cocker spaniel! We won a prize and all bought hula hoops!

My favorite Halloween costume is called Head Waiter. Two people are needed for this. You dress up as a waiter/waitress. Make a large round serving tray from poster board with a large hole cut in the middle. Place a table cloth on top with plates and silverware glued on top (paper & plastic is fine) The 2nd person sits on a chair in the middle with his/her head sticking up through the hole. For a dramatic effect put a top (like used in hotels to keep food hot) over the head and reveal the surprise dish when lifted! This costume is great!!

My favorite costume is not one I've worn, but I thought it was so clever, I've never forgotten it. It was a bag of jelly beans. Someone got some small balloons and put them in a clear plastic garbage bag and wore them. Loved it!

My favorite costume was the one I wore last year.. I was Alice In Wonderland!! But the adult version. I got a lot of compliments on it.. and also a lot of smart cracks, but it was the hit among my friends! That wast he first year I dressed up as a Disney Character and had so much fun being something positive instead of a vampire or devil I'll do it again! Maybe Cinderella this year

Halloween Is MY Holiday. It is the one holiday I let myself go bonkers on. I love coming up with out of the box / original ideas & characters to go as every year.In the past I have gone as the little girl from the ring, which turned out awesome, Gothic vampire complete with white contacts, Crazy witch, & a female Beetle-juice All with my own clothing accessories and make up. Last year I went as the root of all evil Avarice & made myself look as if i had just came from the depths of Hades & even handed out hand made calling cards, it went over well. This year I am trying a new idea. I will be going as the Egyptian Cat Goddess Bast. I got pink cat eye contacts for my eyes, I am hand-making my jewelry & hand bag. I am going to wear a deep red & white goddess dress & focus on my hair & make up which will include some temporary tattoos to my face & body. I always try to put my personal twist to every costume & make it uniquely mine. I believe it will turn out beautifully ;'].

My daughter's costume this year is Miss Candy Land. I sewed candy all over a t-shirt, paired it with gold leggings & she'll wear a colorful wig of curls. The plain white shoes were transformed with different candies painted on & peppermint candies sewn to the tongue. Top it off with a candy necklace & bracelet. It's my favorite by far!

My favorite costume, or at least the one I remember best, was the year my mom paid a lady to sew matching shark costumes for our whole family. I was 13 at the time and extremely embarrassed to be in a shark costume (I was already the tallest in my class and the shark costume went another foot above my head - we looked out of the mouth of the shark). It wasn't so bad when all six of us were dressed up as a shark family, but on my own at the school dance it was torture.
