Beyond 3-D: Movie Theaters Try Out 3-Screen Immersion Viewing

If 3-D movie viewing wasn’t enough to get you off the Netflix and into a movie theater, Hollywood may have something else in store. The 3-screen immersion viewing experience known as ScreenX may be coming to a theater near you as the Cineworld chain rolls them out across the U.K. and world wide in coming months.

CBS News reports about the 3-screen immersion system and how movie-makers are hoping to attract more theater goers with the new tech. A few years ago, 3-D viewing became all the rage with movies like Avatar and Ice Age. But now that 3-D technology has cooled off, movie makers are looking for the next big thing to lure you into that theater seat.

The way 3-screen immersion works is there is a screen directly in front of you and then one screen on your left and the third on your right. This type of viewing gives whoever is watching a more immersive feeling, like actually being in the movie. Cineworld explains the new technology “makes you feel like you’re sitting in the action.”

The current plans will add the 3-screen immersion to 151 Cineworld theater worldwide. Operations director at Cineworld, Kelly Drew explains how it is important to offer the latest technology to keep movie-goers in the seats as well as draw in a new crowd. Drew says, “We're really confident that by offering customers as much choice as possible that it's going to bring people into the cinemas.”

What do you think of the 3-screen immersion technology?

Would you be curious to see your local movie theater offer this new type of viewing experience?

Would it be awkward to look right if the stranger next to you looks left? It it could be a new way to meet people. Not sure this would be workable

I don't know who wouldn't be really excited to try out an experience like this. We have 2 screens for our desktops at home and it beats one screen anyday!

We are movie lovers so anything that adds to the experience is a wonderful thing. If it was in my area I would give it a try.

Wow I am actually very excited for this. I'm sure it will make my kids more focused on the movie as they will feel a part of it. How exciting.

It sounds awesome! I'd love to try this out but how much more would this cost compared to a regular movie ticket?
