In the spirit of community and innovation, we’re shining a spotlight on five incredible Latina-owned businesses. Each of these entrepreneurs brought a new perspective to their industry, from food to haircare and everything in between!
I love Chamoy
When Annie Leal’s father was diagnosed with diabetes, she wanted to find a way for him to enjoy the delicious taste of chamoy. The Monterrey, Mexico native decided to take matters into her own hands and create “I Love Chamoy,” the first diabetic-friendly and sugar-free Mexican candy company that makes your taste buds dance! Based in McAllen, Texas, Leal and her team use monk fruit as an alternative to sugar and hibiscus powder to achieve the signature “chamoy color” without the pesky Red 40. Leal previously brought this idea to the hit TV show ‘Shark Tank’ and left without accepting a deal. Today, I Love Chamoy offers four fabulous flavors including original, mango, watermelon, and pickle.Whether you’re drizzling it over fruit or using it as a dipping sauce, get ready to say “I Love Chamoy!”
Rizos Curls
Rizos Curls was founded in 2017 by Julissa Prado from sunny Los Angeles, California. Growing up, wearing natural hair wasn’t always popular, yet Prado turned her experience into a powerful mission that encourages everyone to embrace their unique texture from coily strands to loose waves. For the second year in a row, Rizos Curls is partnering with Climate Neutral to fund environmental projects such as reforestation, water restoration, and renewable energy! The eco-conscious company can be found at Target, Ulta, and Nordstrom to make fabulous curls available everywhere. Plus, their packaging is 100% recyclable, making your hair as green as it is gorgeous.
Luz y Tierra
Meet Grecia Alfaro, the genius behind Luz y Tierra. Using 100% soy wax, Garza crafts stunning candles that not only light up your home, but honor tradition and heritage. Luz y Tierra, translating to ‘Light and Earth’, started when Alfaro walked into a thrift store and spotted ten vessels that she felt represented in. After a viral TikTok sold out her candles, Alfaro knew she needed to find more vessels and used this as an opportunity to support the local artisans in Mexico. She now collaborates with artisans in Puebla, Estado de Mexico, Michoacán, and Jalisco in Mexico to source handmade vessels that showcase the artistry and beauty of traditional candle-making, while embracing Mexican roots. Based in Mesquite, Texas, Garza and her team pour and decorate each candle by hand to sell on their online webstore.
Lil’ Libros
In 2014, two friends and mothers, Patty Rodriguez and Ariana Stein, founded Lil Libros, a bilingual picture book company that celebrates cultural diversity and bilingual literature. Rodriguez, a community superhero and mom of two, loves empowering young leaders at conferences, while Stein, a savvy businesswoman with a degree from California State University - Dominguez Hills, is passionate about bilingual education. Together, they saw a gap in bilingual literature and decided to create something that wasn’t accessible to them when they were younger. Dedicated to taking little ones on a cultural adventure through imagination and learning, Lil’s Libros gives children the opportunity to embrace their roots through the power of storytelling. With the help of national non-profit organizations, Lil’ Libros can bring books to underserved communities. Lil’ Libros is on a mission to make a big impact.
Siete Foods
Siete Foods was founded in 2014 when Co-Founder and President Veronica Garza faced serious health challenges that led her to adopt a low-inflammation diet. Garza would often opt for a lettuce leaf in place of a tortilla until she got creative in the kitchen and whipped up grain-free tortillas. That’s when the whole Garza family got involved. This proud Mexican-American family of seven from south Texas would set out to recreate beloved flavors from their culture while still keeping health a priority. Together, they’ve crafted many tasty alternatives to enjoy their favorite meals including chips, seasonings, sauces, beans, cookies, and more.
Wow - these stories are inspiring I love how these entrepreneurs each share a part of their culture with the products they created for all to enjoy - very cool.
